Sounds like the CO probe pipe, commonly called the "sniffer" pipe.  I
brazed a ball bearing in the pipe to seal it when it rusted out on the
5KS.  Useless appendage,  I believe it's placed there for random emission
sampling or fine tuning when the cars were new.  Could have some useful
function, but I've never come across a use for it.
