Bill,

Sorry, don't know any good techs down there, possible exception, based on
reputation only (no BTDT) is Zumbach (sp?) Porsche+Audi on Manhatten, ask
for Sid Jr. I just had to do the same thing upstate on Boxing Day, found
a good tech there from references from friends (intend to add him to the
tech list). In my case, the pilot bearing exploded. First, for about a
month and a half, it whirrred, then one day it screeched. Took it in, as
I, like you, had no means to tackle it on my own. Fortunately, my clutch
didn't throb, my guess from the throbbing is the throwout bearing is gone
instead. I was advised by the tech that in an emergency you can "speed
shift" if necessary, including stopping at lights, turn off car, put in
1st, wait for green, start it in gear, speed shift your way up the gears.
Only possible with a car without a start in neutral interlock. He also
said if you have mostly highway driving, you probably could limp along
for a day or so, i.e. the throwout bearing is used to move the clutch
plates in order to shift, no shifting, no need for the throwout bearing
(other listers verify this please). I lucked out, in this case. It's all
a question of miles I guess, I think both of our cars have hit the point
that we either have to go through everything all at once, or we'll
constantly be hit until all of the wear items are replaced =-( . As I
can't swing a new car at the moment, I guess that's going to be my plan
of action. Happy New Years, huh?
