They are variable reluctance sensors. Ie. a magnet with a coil of
wire around it. They work by sensing the change in flux as ferrous
metal moves in front of the magnet. In this case, the metal is either
the timing pin or flywheel teeth. It's true that it would be difficult
to split the signal - you would have to use a high impedance so
as not to affect the ECU's view of the signals (ECU input impedance is
about 45k).
