The ND Golf II kit exhaust manifold will bolt right up to the 3A head.
The 8V Turbo kit, which is designed for the transverse VW's was bolted to a
3A engine in a '77 Audi Fox. It is very possible to fit either kit, with
the longitudinal mounting there is also more room to work with compared the
VW's. The VW apps have the turbo very close to the firewall, the Audi 80
has much more room between the block and the airbox, more room the turbo,
though the airbox and engine mount would need to be heatshielded.
The ND Golf II kit could be adapted quite easily to the longitudinally
mounted 3A in the 80. The stock intake manifold could be replaced by the
Golf piece, so the inlet is up front at the turbo. Then the NC kit plumbing
from the turbo the intake would pop right on. Golf throttle cable, throttle
body, possibly a need for Golf injectors, and other misc Golf bits. The
only custom plumbing would be from the airflow plate. Something similar to
what Javad did on his turbo conversion could be used to get the air from the
airflow plate to the turbo. The coolant lines for the turbo would work
perfectly with the longitudinal engine. The ND kit uses a small IHI turbo
with a built in wastegate, set it at 7 psi and go. Then if there is a huge
hankering for more power the compression can get bumped down, an IC can be
installed, oil cooler, fueler, and set more boost. Though with a FWD rig it
would probably be best to stay in the lower boost ranges.
Take a look at that '77 Audi Fox on the 8vturbo.com site. It's got a 3A
with a GTI head. These heads and manifolds are all interchangeable, except
with 16v models of course. http://8vturbo.com/images/MAN-T3-001-D.jpg
