A mechanic friend of mine is fond of recommending reverse thread drill
bits to remove the remains of a busted stud.  With any luck the turning
action and heat of drilling breaks the stud free and simplifies the
operation, eliminating the need to drill out bigger and add a helicoil
type insert.
