Thank you for your reply.  I have a suspicion you are correct.  I'm trying
to get the engine number to verify with Audi.  Do you (or anyone on the
list) know if there is a way to correlate a VIN with an engine #??????

Craig,
I'm 90% certain that the C4 A6 Avant was only available with the
12v 2.8L V-6 in the US, as well as a slushbox. The change to the 30v
came with the '99 C5 A6 Avant.
