Dead alt update...

Hi Rob,
The reason you have such a cheap rebuild is because you DON'T have a
"rebuilt" (more than likely), you have a "repaired alt" which means that
they repaired what was "broken".

A true rebuild will have the following:
New bearings front and back
New VR
Remachind rotor
Rewound stator
New diodes

All and all, everything is replaced or rebuilt!

You can get a good rebuild from the dealer (of course), auto parts stores,
Bosch parts housing and others (me too!), what you have, does not qualify
for the honorable description "rebuilt".
How long your alt. will last? hard to say, but you might be able to get away
with it. Keep in mind that there is NO FREE LUNCH! You get what you pay
for.

Good luck,

Take care,
Avi

Well I was gonna swap alt's with an old one dad had, however someone at work
told me of a place right here in the Worcester, MA area that rebuilds
alternators. Well about 90 minutes later and 70$ poorer, i have a rebuilt
alternator. I never even checked the prices at the auto parts store but im
imagining the 90A alt for the 5000 cs tq is prolly at least 150 if not more.
The name of the place is G&L Rebuilds and they are in the yellow pages for
Worcester under alternators. Nice guys too! So now I can do my swap today
in the sun and get my q back on the road.

Rob
