Ken,

If you can put up with the look of quad 4x6 headlights from pre 86 cars,
European headlight conversion can be pretty inexpensive. I bought the
pigtails, buckets, headlight trim and grill from a fellow lister and then
put in some H4's and H1's with 55/60 watt lamps . The improvement is
dramatic and is a simple install. I think I have about $160 into the
conversion (I was lucky to find a set of used H4's and H1's). Even if you
had to buy new lights the cost would be $240. A bit easier to swallow than
$800.

My next step is to install relays and increase the wattage to 80/100w in the
h4's and 100w in the h1's!

My advice is to go for it all, Chip + lights for about $500.

Jack
