melting headlight switch on 4000

What is the deal with changing wiring for the 9007 bulbs? My stock 9004 plug
"seemed" to fit onto the 9007 fine and I had two working light settings (dim
and dimmer). The 9007 bulbs did not focus the beam whatsoever, the light
scattered everywhere.
