The metal fragments would be on the sensor not the flywheel, and if present 
would defeat its function. The sensor is a magnetic switch, triggering as 
metal passes in front of it. Since it's a magnet any fragments in the 
bellhousing will cling to it, and if large enough maintain a constant signal 
state, at which point the ECU gets very confused.
