Largest 15" tire on a type 44 avant?

[I am sure that this has been covered before, but what is the largest =
tire size I can go on an '87 TQW. I am looking at a 225 50 15, will =
they fit, or will I have rubbing problems?]

I found 215/XX YY even to be a tad wide - rubbing the wheelwell on the
passenger side rear when vehicle is loaded. I've heard others mention
similar, although there may be variences in vehicles and tires.

Now the question becomes - why, what are your objectives?

I ask because with the 205/60VR15 Michelin XGTV4's I have installed, it is
enough to give my passengers whiplash going around a curve and not breaking
loose or squealing, and at 100+ pulling loaded trailer(some would consider
this suicidal and I'm not condoning it) my '87 Avant was steady as a rock.

I observed also when purchasing new tires, the width of the tire is not
always exactly as the size indicates, XGTV4 case in point. They are
definatly wider than the MXV4's I took off and almost as wide as the 215's
of a different brand I had tried for comparison.

My recommendation is stay with the stock width, maybe 10mm wider, and find a
tire that will do what you want - there has been much discussion on this
lately involving the physics incl. tire pressure, so consider some of this
as well.

'87 5KCSTQW - Michelin XGTV4's on stock wheels with no desire to
upgrade(again).
'85 4KQ - Looking for new (possibly used in good condition) wheels and tire
combo for Project GTQ - 15" or 16" will do. Recommendations? I'll be
keeping the stock wheels for winter use.
