You have to press a certain combo to start entering the code, and if 
you miss, you get three tries.  After that, you have to wait over an 
hour to get to try again.

The codes are not universal(such a thing would defeat the purpose of 
a radio code) and you MUST go to the dealer.  They will certainly 
expect proof of ownership and many refuse to simply take a written 
down number, instead verifying the VIN number of the car and the 
radio's sticker.

The whole process should take under 30 minutes and they may be able 
to do it while you wait.  I've never heard of anyone having trouble 
doing this.
