5kt diagnostics

Scott,
I put a "new" (to me anyways) boot on and had to fix a couple of small leaks. Right now the decel port is plugged with a C (or is it D) cell battery and the MM hose is new (and I've been running stock boost). The breather hose is in ok shape. What's the vacuum check valve?
What does it cost to buy a brand new distributor boot?
I can't do the "pull the dip stick" trick because the car won't idle. It's hard enough to keep it running by playing with the throttle. I'm going to enlist some help and get out my can of ether to check (again) for vacuum leaks. It the car was carbureted, I'd say that I'm using the accelerator pump to keep it running.
I haven't checked the I/C yet (I plan to) and I have to borrow some CIS pressure gauges.
The weirdest part is that the first two times this happened, it was at almost the exact same spot. The first time it cleaned itself up and I couldn't repeat the failure. The next time it was consistent and has remained the same. This leads me to think it's electrical (heat/time related), but it sure seems like it's running lean. Is there something electrical that can cause lean running?
BTW, a VW friend of mine lives across the alley from the LT1 ur-q (small world, eh?). I'm in the Detroit area and make it down to Chicago occasionally. It sounds like there's a few of you down there. Maybe we should have a gathering of sorts some time?
Thanks for everyone's help,
Matt Beaubien

A couple of things I'd ck here, you went backwards on diagnostics, but
that'll make this easier:
