Automatic trans needed '87 4000S

VW Fox, yes, Jetta, no.  The Audi 4000 has a longitudinal engine orientation
like the Fox, but very different than the Jetta, which has a transverse
engine orientation.  The Fox transmission will bolt up to the 4000, but
the gear ratios are probably all wrong for your engine.  The Jetta's tranny
is completely different and won't fit at all.  It's best to find a proper
4000 tranny for replacement.

As far as 5-speed manual conversion, it's possible, but not simple.
Also, you cannot use the quattro's shift mechanism.  The 4-cylinder 4000
uses the type 013 5-sp tranny that is different than the 5-cylinder cars,
and the linkages, shift box, pedal cluster, etc., are all different.
Morever, the 4-cylinder 4000 cars use a cable clutch linkage, not the
hydraulic system found on the 5-cyl/quattro cars.
