Dale Earnhardt- RIP (NAC)

For those outside the US, until you have seen some of things he's done on a
race track at 190 mph like his 'pass in the grass' it's hard to understand.
Some of the saves he has made while totally sideways at speed are incredible
and his ability to stick a car in smallest places was miraculous. His
ability to "see the air" in the draft on the super speedways is unamtched.
There is no one you want to see less on your rear bumber with 2 to go then
Dale Earnhardt. According to another great stockcar driver Buddy Baker the
same applies on the Interstate as well.
NASCAR is not F1 and certainly lacks it's glamour and technology but it is
speed and hard racing. Pure, raw speed and all out racing. No breaks, no
rests just 3 1/2 hours of raw speed side by side nose to tail for 500 miles.
Usually in very hot, muggy conditions too. NASCAR is certainly an American
thing and it's one of the things I grew up with and love.
I've seen Dale Earnhardt walk away from a 100 wrecks like the one yesterday
and I just can't understand how this one killed him. I just don't get it.
I was never an Earnhartd fan but he is to NASCAR what Mario Lemuiex is to
hockey, Joe Montana is to US football and Babe Ruth is to baseball.

Thank you Taka for this post. While I am not a huge NASCAR fan (I follow
some favorites and attend/shoot a couple events per season) nor was I a
huge Earnhardt fan, I am deeply saddened by this loss which is very much
like the day the motorsports world lost Senna. I have a huge amount of
respect and admiration for Dale Jr. and truly feel for him, the entire
Earnhardt family, and also Mike Waltrip who finally got his first
Winston Cup win only to have his elation destroyed, his win tainted, due
to the loss of his friend and car owner who helped him get there
yesterday. A very sad day for the motorsports world regardless of one's
take on NASCAR, we are all very sad today. I too am still in shock and
had nightmares all night. This one hit me hard, but it seems like they
all do.

A minor clarification. The Earnhardt #3 Corvette took 4th at the Rolex
24, not first, that was the team car.
