To me, it looked more like he lost air off of the rear of the car as he
slowed in an attempt to break the momentum of the following group, the
light contact made with Sterling Marlin seems secondary to the loose tail
of the car. The closeness of the nose of Marlin's car may have caused the
air to come off of Dale's car, but that's something that they all seem to
have done and experienced at one time or another, unfortunately for Dale,
it appears that he was lifting throttle at the time, which already
unloaded an already loose tail. It really looks like a non-malicious
racing incident, unfortunately, we will never know for sure since NASCAR
doesn't mandate black boxes like CART and F1 do.
