airbag light

Richard,
They should be able to plug the vag diagnostic tool into the new igniter and
find out what is wrong. If it is an open circuit, then it is possible to put
an ohm meter on the clock spring (its in the Bentley).
However, your airbag light was not on because of the recall. The OLD style
igniters will turn the light off as soon as any fault is repaired. The NEW
igniter need to be re-set by the vag machine if it finds a fault. When my
car still had the OLD igniter, I turned the ignition on with the steering
wheel removed and the dash half out to track down an intermittent connection
on the back of the dash. The air bag light of course came on. As soon as I
reassembled everything, the light went out. If I were to try that with the
new igniter, the light would not go out and I would have to go to a dealer
to have it reset.
They need to put an ohm meter on the clock spring ( requires removal of the
airbag form the wheel and disconnection of the red connector under the
steering column cover. If it ohms out ok, and it is still in the airbag
circuit, it is probable the air bag. Only I cannot remember if the airbag
itself is measured at all. It might just be the clock spring. In any case,
your old ignitor was telling you that there was a system fault. The fault is
still there
