interesting 3k brick wall on 90Q (KE3)

When I finished my lights, firing the car up after a 3.5 day hiatus (had
to drive the coupe, oh well!), the first trip was rather odd - the
engine would not rev above about 2.9-3 k rpms.  It acted just like the
normal rev limiter does.

This also resulted in a top speed of just under 60 mph in 5th.

There was a lot of lifter noise for a bit - I am wondering if the
clicking and clacking was so loud it really ticked off the knock
sensor?  After shutting the car down at the coffee store and restarting,
the problem did not return, but neither did the noisy lifters.

Any reasonably well informed ideas out there?
