Steve,
Have you seen the new Vise-Grips product has a V notch cut into the
fixed jaw? It allows you to clamp down on three flats of a hex-head
fitting -- far superior to a flare-nut wrench, IMO. There's a 6-inch
version that's perfect for 8mm-10mm flare nuts. You might be able to
salvage the fitting you have with this tool.

I own four German cars ranging in age from 13 to 30 years (in the Rust
Belt) so I've had ample opportunities to use the 6-incher on my cars!
It's never let me down.
