Linda - I had a similiar occurance when using the lights in my 1975 Audi
100LS (first Audi but no longer owned), and found out that the alternator
bolt for holding the tension on the drive belt had come loose. This did
not allow the alternator to output the required amount so the car would try
to stop running with the headlights on. I drove home with the parking
lights only, and then found the problem the next day. Check the belt
condition and the belt tension. Also, you might check around with the
local auto part stores and see if they will do a free alternator output
check in the car for you. Hope this helps.
