Subject: rpms or boost?
Ok, I know I may start a war here, and that is definately not my
intention. What would you esteemed listers think is better in terms of
economy and wear and tear, boost vrs. rpms?
There is a 4 mile hill I climb many times a week in a chipped '87
5ktqa. It climbs it easily in 5th at about 2300rpms, indicating 1.1
bar. I can gear down to 4th, around 3100rpm, and boost drops to
0.6-0.7.
The reason I ask is because I linked to a picture of a glowing red turbo
from here last month. The caption stated that the car wasn't being
driven hard. Really makes me wish for an oil temp guage!
Thanks for your educated imput! (And I've always used Mobil 1!)

The ONLY time i have seen my manifold glowing red was after a 20 min high
speed run home from work late at night... (120mph+) (incidently this is when
my euro marker light decided to jump ship).. i wanted to see how well the
car ran at high speeds... i got home and let the car idle (and cool down)
and i popped the hood to see if everything was ok... and the manifold was
glowing a deep red... your turbo isnt going to be glowing from a mere 1.1
bar going up a hill UNLESS there is something seriously wrong... perhaps
overly rich condition or clogged exhaust or something like that...
