V8 Tires, and (question about sizes and quattro)

 From what I've been told, the same size tire needs to be on all four 
wheels.  I saw a transmission at my mechanic's garage from a 91 200Q that 
had different size tires on the front and back.  The center diff blew 
itself up and sent pieces through the housing.   It was an expensive event.
