Rough 1st gear noise from 6-speed S2/S4/S6 gearbox

The North American S4 5 spd transmissions have a similar problem. If the
wheels are spun in first gear, the gear surfaces can gall, resulting in a
noisy first gear. Once galled, the noise gets progressively worse. Audi
fitted a wider first gear in mid-'95 to reduce gear loading and resolve the
problem.  I have heard of one '94 S4 with a 6 speed transmission with a
noisy first gear. I believe the RS2 and S2 transmissions had a hardened
mainshaft - this should make them less susceptible to this problem.
