All my type 89s so far have had problems in this area. '88 80: Speedo out
intermittently, tach out when it was cold. '87 90q: dash lights dead,
speedo and tach intermittent, autocheck dead. '87 80: speedo intermittent
when it's cold. Note that the odometer kept functioning throughout all
these problems...
I don't think your dash was replaced because the odo was dead, as that
seems to be confined to the type 44 and 81/85 cars. And if you've paid a
reasonable price for your car, I wouldn't worry too much about how many
miles it's done.
One idea: if the car's been dealer serviced you might be able to get the
mileage from the dealer's computer.

HTH!
