I went snowboarding last weekend in vermont (200 mi. from home). It was
going great until on saturday night my right front outer cv joint breaks.
On sunday my friend brings me to all part stores in the area. They wouldn't
be able to get it for a couple days and i'm supposed to be leaving that
night. SO...
I decide to take the whole shaft out and try locking my center diff. and
drive home rwd. I left the outer joint housing in the hub so i wouldn't
destroy the wheel bearing. The cage was broken in half and allready out, so
were all the balls. Guess what??? I made it home no problem like this.
It is strange having rwd in a car thats awd. It handled very well in the
dry. Very nice, controllable oversteer. But thank god it didn't snow, I
almost got stuck in my snowy hotel parking lot.
It turns out the parts store i got my axles from gave me the wrong ones.
They fit but were tight (long) and why it broke. I've been trying to
straighten out which axles i need. Their books and computers are wrong. My
bently helped out a lot giving axle lenght proving they gave me the wrong
ones. Hopefully the right ones are coming.
The diff lock seems very strong. I drive my car hard. I have spun 3rd
decently in the dry (with snow tires) with no complaints from the tranny.
So i'm wondering that maybe dyno runs are possible fwd or rwd with sub 250
or 300hp. Maybe more of a pita than its worth though.
Hopefully i get the awd back before snow comes.
