I've seen that car. I've been curious about what lies beneath the hood. NA?
Turbo? I have no clue but as 4kqs go it is a nice looking car. Keep me
posted

Subject: Oettinger 4kq + Thanks to Dan et all!!! (kinda long)
First off, a thank you to Dan et all who scrambled to get the list back
up in spite of obvious adversity and a major PITA, thank you!!!
Now, some long-time list members may recall a thread about an Oettinger
modified 1984 4kq in Santa Cruz, CA. a few years ago. As it happens, I
now know the owner and he is thinking of selling this car I have been
drooling on for so many years wherever I happened to see it parked. He
is thinking of selling it and I wanted to run it by the list to seek
help in establishing a preliminary fair market value. I will try to
describe it but need to get a fresh look to see what kind of shape
overall the car really is. I think it is safe to say it is worth more to
an enthusiast than a garden variety 1984 4kq would be...but how much is
the question. Here's what I know...
The mods were a body kit (that looks nice and good...not tacky boy racer
stuff), suspension mods, larger displacement and hotter cam (and not
sure what all else), custom recarro interior (front seats need some
upholstry work, but he does have new matching black cloth to get it done
with...), I forget the style but it has 15" wheels also. This was all
done by a shop in Santa Clara, CA. when the car was new. (Delivered from
Anderson Behel Porsche-Audi to the tuner, mods done when the car was
zero miles.)
The current owner bought the car from the original owner when the car
was still pretty much new. So, while technically a two owner car it
really was only owned by one person for 99% of the life. It did have
some electrical issues early on from a poorly installed alarm. More
recently it had some driveability issues that took forever for a local
shop here in Santa Cruz to sort out. The car only has ~100k miles and is
still very nice overall (always garage kept and it was never a daily
driver). I know Jerry, the owner, is getting anxious to sell it but has
not seriously offered it anywhere. He has invited me to come drive it to
evaluate it and, if there is a way, would like me to have it. Last time
we spoke value (a couple years back now) he was under the impression the
car is worth ~$6k. I think that he needs a reality check there (though
this is a one-of-a-kind car it certainly is not worth what an Ur-Q or
4kq turbo transplant would fetch). Because of this I have kinda avoided
thinking about it but am still curious/intersted since this is one cool
and unique 4kq to be sure.
Thoughts, comments, and suggestions are welcome. If you think you maybe
interested in the 4kq in the event I can't swing anything myself let me
know also and I'll hook you up. (Sorry, I am going to try first to get
this thing...I have really liked this car for way too long not to try.)
