Oil loss

Hello listers,

I have a problem with my '87 5KT. The car started consuming oil at an
alarming rate - 1.5 to 2 liters in 1000km. I can't figure out the cause.
Here are the details:

- There are no oil leaks from the engine. I've inspected the car fron
underneath and frankly, it's the cleanest engine I've ever seen on a 14
years old car.
- I've removed the intake hose from the turbo. The turbine spins freely.
There's a little (less than 1mm) axial play. Is it normal?
- Some oil found in the accordeon hose. I believe it's normal as well. Some
fine oil mist found on not -so-tight intake and vacuum lines connections.
- I asked a friend to drive behind and see if the car produces any blue
smoke. None was observed. The exhaust is clear, with normal catalytic
converter smell.
- When the oil level is full and the knock sensor is not being fooled by
knocking lifters, the car pulls strong and boost climbs to 1.3 bar easily.
It needs injectors because it occasionally takes several attempts to start
and vibrates at idle, but other than that it runs good.

Any ideas? I thought the oil either leaks out or gets burned. It doesn't
leak and it doesn't seem to get burned. I run Elf 5W40 synthetic. Is it
possible that this oil burns so clean it doesn't produce any smoke, even in
those quantities? Any advice as usually will be appreciated.
