I hate to be a pain but I really could use some ideas...

It sounds like it's coming from the engine bay. However it isn't related to
RPM. It's the same even if the RPM is different. It almost seems to me like
something that is trying to retard the engine isn't working. If I accelerate
real easy there are no problems, it only does it when I'm moderately
accelerating.

Hi Brian.
Can you tell if its coming from the engine bay or not?
If its a 'clicking' sound, that may sound like it is approximately at the
rpm of the engine at the time, then it is probably a bad exhaust gasket at
the head.
If its more like a knock, like someone hitting the motor with a hammer, then
its the auxilliary vacuum pump rod on the head. Both problems are pretty
common.

The original message is below. I'm just hoping someone can give me some
ideas on why my car would make a very loud ticking sound for the second or
so before it shifts up when I'm moderately accelerating.
Here is a little background on what has happened. When I got my car last
July it was running great. A few weeks ago the lifters started chattering a
bit and there was a loud clicking noise coming from the engine every now and
then. At first I thought it was a bad oil pressure valve on the left side,
because that was where the lifter noise was. One day a couple of weeks ago
the oil temp light started coming on when I was turning left (taking oil
away from the left side of the engine) and the check engine light went on
and the car started running rough. Thankfully I was in my driveway letting
it warm up when it started to run rough. Well I took it to the dealer and it
was diagnosed as a bad oil retention valve. Along with that they replaced
the crank shaft seals, did a timing belt, water pump, tensioners and a whole
bunch of other stuff (has 85k on it so it was about that time). Well I got
the car back yesterday. It definitely runs better then it was before but I
still have a problem I don't like, and this is where any ideas of what might
be wrong will come in handy.
The car makes a loud(!) clicking sound (similar to a relay) like 10 times a
second before shifting up (sometimes when shifting down). It is an
automatic. So when I'm accelerating from a stop it will click a few times
then shift at every gear. I have no idea what is causing it since I don't
know much at all about cars, I don't think the mechanic heard it when test
driving it so I'm hoping someone can give me some ideas so when I call them
back I might be able to tell them something.
