Could I kill my steering rack?

when i got my coupe it did not have power steering. PO mumbled
something about it handling better like that. drove it that way for two
years until a date mentioned something about how old the car was that it
did not have PS... my pump was shot from running dry - caused by a
rusted out little hard line.
so... the no PS was originally caused by rust, not coolness. And
running the car for years that way did not seem to hurt the rack at all.
heck, you're just gonna spin the wheel with the tires in the air while
flushing fluid?
