"Valve in trans" could be one of the solenoid valves in the auto tranny (it's an auto right?).
If the transmission computer detects a problem it will fall into a safe mode which is why the car was acting limp and weird.

Subject: A4tq troubles - part deux

My sister just had the 2000 A4tq put in for repair. The dealer says it may
be valve in trans and computer. Well, I know ECU is probably going to be
reset or even replaced. But does "valve on trans" ring any bell for
anybody of what this dealer's saying? Or is the dealer just BS'ing my
  sister?

Recap: My sister was driving it and stopped at the light. The A4tq sort of
"lurched" and engine died. She tried and started again, but afterwards
A4tq was acting very "limp" and "weird" (she says).
