Probably worn brushes, Dave, if the motor is original. You can check the
brush wear by pulling off the plenum cover and removing the rubber cooling
hose running from the blower housing to the motor. This will let you see the
top brush. If the shunt wire is resting on the bottom of the brush holder
slot, the brushes are worn out. You can sometimes get a bit of extra life by
pushing down on the top brush.
Left hand turns will also make the blower chirp when the front bearing is
worn out.
