Have you pressurized the intake system to check for leaks? Most type 44s
have a T in one of the intake tract hoses or you can add one yourself. First
you need to seal up the intake system. Loosen the upper & lower clamps on the
steel tube between the IC and the fuel distributor. Pull the tube out of the
fuel distributor boot and put a 2 inch rubber water pipe cap (available at
most hardware stores) on that end and clamp it down. Connect your shop air
supply, regulated down - less than 5 psi - to the T and listen for leaks. A
bottle of soapy water can help but you should be able to hear any leaks and /
or verify there are no leaks. For the 20v 2C engine, I made a cap by using a
front wheel bearing housing from an A2 VW (it was handy and fit the intake
hose perfectly) and welded a plate with a fitting on it so I have the cap and
the T fitting all in one assembly.
By the way, this is the second thing I do (after a compression test) to each
car that I has a drivability problem. You either find any air leak problems
or know there are none.
