Driveshaft lube

In my Bentley for 5ktq's it says to lube every 9000 miles...That's actually
pretty often...I wonder how many 5ktq's, etc. have shafts that never got
grease since their dealer days? What other parts on the type44's need lube?
I thought modern cars were supposed to do away w/ all the grease fittings
and lube stuff. I think the Vega was s'posed to be the USA's first try at
lube free chassis. My '65 MGB had grease fittings on the driveshaft, but I
think the very late models came w/ a lube free model. So why can't Audi do
it in '86? Is there another alternative? Aren't there some types of shafts
that don't need it? Thanks.
