Kevin:

I think you are right.  Although my set up is post production of the car,
there are all sorts of Audi/VW clues all over the place including pictures
of the dash switches but no reference as to their use.

I am going to take a look into the plenum chamber only after installing the
rebuilt-for-a-second-time compressor is installed and I have established why
the compressor clutch is only getting 6 volts.
