ambient air pump: when is it turned on?

The asirator would only run on my V8 after the ingnition had been on
for a short while. At first I thought I needed the engine running, but
then I realized it's on some sort of delay.
My ran/runs fine, but I replaced it anyway with one from a '99 Cadillac
Seville. It was not a direct replacement. The casing is entirely
different,
it comes with its own temp sensor and there is a small circuit board in
it that lowers the speed of the fan to make sure it is not heard.
I modified the casing, removed the circuit board, had to match up the
wiring, and figure a way to mount the hose to its end. It finally went
in
very nicely and is quiet even though I got rid of the speed restriction
of
the circuit board by wiring the fan directly to the Audi wiring.
