excessive fuel

When I bypass the loss of volts to the fuel pump relay (see previous post)
I can get the car (1983 5kt auto non-quattro gas) to run. It will run very
rich, and when I remove the volts to the fuel pump relay, then the car will
run very well for a moment or two as the existing fuel is used up, before a
shutdown. Before I take out the injectors to test them and clean them, is
there anything I can check to see what is causing the rich condition. I
have replaced the air cleaner filter. I have a new oxygen sensor to put
in, but I wanted to hold off so that I would not be covering the sensor
with the carbon from the excessive rich condition.

Thanks, Tex.
