Hello all,
Went to try and teach the loving girlfriend how to drive a stick shift last
night. Everything was going wonderfully, with her even commenting how nice
the car was to drive and all. Had been driving around parking lots for
about a half hour, and she stalled the car. Bucked and then died. So, I
told her, "no problem, just start it back up, and we'll go". Car won't
start. I try it. Car still won't start. We wait for a while, and after
several tries, the car starts, runs for 15 seconds or so, then acts like I
shut off the key. Tach and car stop. No sputtering, nothing. Dash lights
are fine, and doesn't seem like the power is interrupted. Sometimes after a
while, the car will run, and when it does, never for very long. When I'm
cranking the engine over, I can't hear the fuel pump.
I then was able to get the car started a few more times, and noted that as
long as I didn't press on the gas too hard, the car will run. If I rev the
engine it will die. I was able to drive the car home (with three stalls)
for about 10 miles, making sure that I kept the revs under 2k, and didn't
press the gas much. It seemed that if I disconnected a 4 connector plug
behind the passenger's side glove box, then plugged it back in, that it
would be more likely to start, but that wasn't a consistent sure fire
solution.
I didn't get a chance to do any diagnostics yet, to find out if I have spark
or anything, as the car is in my G/F's apartment parking lot, and it was
dark out when we finally got home. Anyone ever had anything like this
happen before? Acts like a fuel problem, but when the car dies, it is very
sudden. Just like the ignition switch is being turned off. Car cranks over
fine, but nothing happens. I have no idea what could cause this. Anyone
know? Car is a 86' 4kcsq.
Thanks everyone!
