the local audi shop was nice enough to offer me the use of their facilities
when i told them that i wanted to re-con the gearbox on tracey's golf gti
(8v). more than that, the foreman and service manager were happy to stay
around after work hours to help me with the job. anyway, it ended up being
a bit of a blast, and a lot of fun. some beer has been drunk, and the job
is getting along nicely. monkey lads? not even close. a pleasure to work
with people like these...

point of the story is though that the service manager showed me his
"warranty room" which is where he puts the bits that he takes off audi's and
vw's for repairs under warranty. 2 s4 turbos (both wastegate rods stuffed),
1 passat turbo with a similar problem. all repaired under warranty, but the
service manager says with a gleam in his eye, "nothing wrong with the turbos
you know". had a good look at the s4 item, it's a nice little turbo, and a
very neat installation. also a zillion vw passat water pumps, which
indicate that this part isn't quite right.

no motor mechanical bits, apart from the tubos, the vast majority of parts
were either water pumps, electircs or air-cond parts.

if anyone wants to know hazet or matra (sp?) part numbers for audi special
tools, drop me a line, and i'll get them for you - this shop as them all,
and as phil has said, the parts are available off the web.
