I'm not sure about this..as Andrew said it is a 5000 with no mention of
Quattro.
[If you've been using regular power steering fluid instead of the hydraulic
oil Audi specifies, you may end up also needing a new pump and possibly a
brake pressure accumulator (you'll see it described here as the "bomb"), as
well as the hoses and their seals connecting the rack and brake
systems. There's a possibility your power steering fluid will cause
problems with the seals in all these elements. I had trouble with these
parts after some fool at a fast-fluids-exchange place dumped power steering
fluid into my '87 5ktq's reservoir before I realized what was going on.]
The '88 5000 Wagon I had awhile back used regular PS fluid. I assume the
'89 non-Quattro may be the same.
You may need a new rack, but it is helpful to degrease everything, as you
may find it is a leaky hose, or maybe the pump.
BTW, Welcome to the list. Once you get the new "old car" issues resolved,
these cars are mostly easy to keep up with, despite all of the horrer
stories. Just fix things as they happen so you don't end up with compound
problems and do your best to keep the sagging headliner out of your hair.
Cheers,
Ben
