So, yes, do it right at least.

Buy as many new parts as you feel like (tstat, hoses, etc.).  Pull all
the external stuff like the radiator, clean everything well with plenty
of water and reassemble.  The heater core hoses are tough to replace,
but you can probably leave them alone for now.  If you do not have AC
anymore, this is a ggreat time to remove some of the useless stuff it
left behind, with the AC evaporator out the heater hoses are easier -
well, it *has* to be out of the way...

If it has a been a long time or unknown time since the last timing
belt/water pump, do them as well.
