when i did this on my 4kq...
i removed the heater core hose from the rear and the top radiator hose and
used a garden hose on full blast and continuously keep filling it for
several minutes..
then i put the hoses back on and filled with water, run engine and i
repeated the procedure 3 times till all the water was clear...
the i drained as much as possible and added a gallon of the prestone orange
phosphate free coolant, then topped off the remainder with a 50/50 mix...
cooling gauge now rides between 1/3-1/2 versus 2/3-3/4....
HTH!
