Listers,
I've finally made the trip back to Michigan from Waterfest. Lots of
interesting things done along the way. Recap:
The good:
Waterfest in general. My first time out at this event. Lot's of nice VW's
and Audi's. Some of the cooler cars were in the parking lot(s). I spotted a
couple of nice Audis out there including a couple of white 4000Q's, a
yellowish 90 Q with smoked factory hellas(kind of reminded me of Neds)a
couple of nice type 44's, some coupe quattros, etc.
There were generally very few older Audi's in the show. Most Audi's were of
the newer A4/S4 type. There was a beatiful 85 4000 quattro with a turbo
conversion in RS2 blue that was pretty sharp. There was also a nice 91 Coupe
quattro too.
Vendor wise it seemed like alot of the "tuner" companies were there peddling
all the newest and coolest stuff. Did'nt do me much good with my type 44. I
did however pick up some small used parts and a couple of Audi posters from
one of the second hand vendors.
One of the vendors there was a company called quattromotion. They had a
pretty cool rally Audi 90 Q with a turbo conversion put in . They were
pretty nice folks and even fired up the engine so we could hear it roar.
The drag racing was pretty cool stuff. Two brothers from Manchester, NH had
two type 44's that they were absolutely blasting down the track with.
Unfortunently for the one brother his radio fell out and wedged between the
center console and his gear shifter so he could not get his car into 3rd
gear! He was then eliminated...
I got to talk to Chris Semple and it was finally nice to meet him. I plan on
ordering alot of stuff from him in the future:) I also got to talk to fellow
listers Taka M. and Larry L. on the way out to the parking lot. I wish I
could have had more time to talk to them. They both own beatiful type 44's
and I am jealous.
Other good things that happened on the trip:
To the braless girl changing her shirt in the back of that Ford Escort in
Ohio: thank you...
Eating at the Reading Terminal Marketplace in Philadelphia. Great
food/atmosphere.
Hanging out at Love Park in downtown Philly with our feet soaking in the
fountain on a hot summers day.
The drive through Pittsburgh. What a cool area! Lots of good stuff to see.
Driving through the double tunnel on I-76 at 3 am going 120 mph with a
caravan of 8 VW's. Stupid....but fun.
Camping. Illegally of course. Picthing a tent at the Harrisburg, PA reststop
on I-76.
Hanging out at the hotels the night before Waterfest and watching all the
kids go nuts. Drag racing, burn outs, drunken fights, you name it...it
happened.
Listening to my friends Corrado G60 with a Lysholm supercharger in it.
Sounds like a fire truck.
The bad:
The dust fields used for parking at Waterfest. The 1 hour wait to get out of
the parking lot...
The foolish kids that hit the police car at the Ramada while drag racing...
The kid in the neon who peeled out and almost ran over the Mt. Arlington
police officer at the Sheraton...
The accident on 46 coming in to waterfest. I heard that a kid slammed his VW
under a semi truck. OUCH!
Getting busted by Mt. Arlington police for pitching an illegal tent. They
crept up on us in the middle of the night and caught us off guard. After
some initial confrontation and a search we were told that it would be ok to
continue camping were we were but we should watch out for bears and deer.
Deer?
I-80 traffic which generally....sucks.
The cops at the Del Water Gap. I've never seen so many cops looking to give
out tickets. They were using maroon unmarked Chevy's...
The heat. We had no A/C there and back. Lots of water ingested...
Waterfest being a one day event. Needs to be broken up a bit...
I recommend anyone who is interested in VW/Audi to attend if they can.
