Bilstein rear problem

I have Bilsteins on my '90 200TQ. There is a problem in the rear. The
top of the Bilsteins are both longer & wider than the factory shocks,
and this causes the top of the shock to hit the body when going over
bumps, with a loud *thump*. I made a solution with an old garden hose
that I put on the top, but it is now worn out after 1000 miles. I
guess this problem applies to everybody with Bilstein rear shocks on a
type 44 or C4. Any tips? I'm thinking of several options, but they
have rather big disadvantages:
* Enlarge the hole in the body from 1 cm to 3 cm diameter. (maybe not
the best solution?)
* Use a hacksaw and shorten the top of the Bilsteins by 1.5 cm. (will
void warranty and make a hard removal)
