Steering rack dust boot broken...Dangerous or not?

Hi fellow listers!

As the subject says, I've noticed today that the dust boot on my steering 
rack was broken...is it dangerous to have the car running like this? Is it 
hard to replace? (a quick look at it indicated me that it might be a PITA).
One more question: has anyone ever tried to fit the 4kq ABS driveshafts to 
non-ABS Audi 80(1988) bearing housings? I'd like to do this because of the 
ability to have the G60 brake upgrade a lot easier done than with my 4kq 
type (my car is ane euro-spec 85 Coupe quattro-not the urq) strut and 
bearing housings...
Any BTDTs?
