CC arm, 4K belts (Audi Content!)

(See, I promiseed I'd send some Audi content sooner or later!)

For the lister who has the type 44 with the bad climate control box,
specifically the temp control arm won't move, here's the fix.

The climate control on these is a mid-80s GM system, from the big cars,
Cad/Buick/Olds, etc full size barges. Look for an 88 or so Oldsmobile 88 in
the junkyard, and grab the CC box from it - it is under the dash, just in
front of the glove box (does that position sound familiar?). Cost should
not exceed $10 at a local pick&pull.

Unfortunately, the box isn't a direct bolt-in. You can salvage the temp
control motor and all the gears (which is what is wrong with yours), and
four of the failure-prone vacuum solenoids (de-soldering is required.).

A little mix and matching of the temp controller motor, gearbox and
actuator arm will put you back in business. Only real trick is to index the
arm on the shaft so it moves to the right position (The Audi arm gets
transferred to the GM motor/gearbox), and don't use a big hammer because
this stuff is fragile.

Now my question - on an 86 4K 4 cyl automatic, the car is eating alternator
belts, about one a WEEK! Pulleys are aligned, and I've had them off looking
for burrs, bolts sticking out, etc. This belt runs the water pump, the
alternator, and drives from the crank pulley. The PS pump is a separate
belt and is OK. The rear side of the belt looks like it is scraping on
something, but I cannot find it, either by looking, or by (carefully)
running my finger around the belt grooves - engine off, of course!

Any ideas?

Best Regards,

Mike Arman
