90 20V Quattro Questions

After inheriting my wife's 90 20v Quattro Sedan and driving it for a while (my 5KTQ has turned into a project car...long story), I realize that it's in need of some more zip, and also an engine rebiuld, as it's consuming oil like no other car in my experience.
Anyway, my question is this: what can be done with the normally aspirated 20v to give it some real spunk? I've already got a K&N on there, but I'm talking real power. Have any of you N/A 20v owners had extensive headwork/blockwork done? What is the HP/torque potential with good old-fashioned hot-rodding (ie. port matching, polishing, valve job/bigger valves, higher compression, etc)?
Or, would it be sacrilege to swap an MC (which I already own) with the extensive aftermarket options as many have done into their 80/90Q's?
