It should be kicking around near the engine/tranny joint, about halfway
down the left side. If your car is a later Q there will be two more
wires with there own connector joining the bundle, for the diff lock
actuator.
Find this four pin thing (which is round, barrel shaped). Also find the
two switches ont he tranny, usually one at the rear and one closer to
the front, and do the routine electrical tests - continuity of the
switches to the connector, function of switches, continuity of connector
to the circuits it runs. I believe both switches are normally open
types. You should be able to turn on the reverse lights with the key
"on" by shorting the appropriate two terminals. Likewise, shorting the
fifth gear switch will turn off the upshift light.
Reverse light problems are typical with these cars, I have seen many
splices and hacked in wires. Not so many of the fifth gear upshift
light - another possible source for that problem is frayed/leaking vac.
hoses - the upshift light controller runs off a switch in the vacuum
advance line to the distributor.
While these two problems do meet at a common point, it ius never
actually "shared" - they may have separate causes.
