Hi Chris,
Replacing the downpipe is not hard as long as you have access to torches and
a cut off grinder. Procedure is fairly easy.....

1)remove 5 nuts holding downpipe to exhaust manifold. This is where the
torches come into play, as most likely those nuts are rust welded into
place, but they will come out once heated till cherry red.

2)remove the bolt holding the downpipe to the downpipe-transmission mount.

3)remove 3 bolts holding downpipe to cat. This is where the cut-off grinder
comes in handy, as these bolts are usually rusted blobs, and it is easy to
cut them off.

4)downpipe is now disconnected, work downpipe out of car.

Thats it :-)

Hey all,
I finally pin pointed the whisping sound coming from my 86 4k. I was so
affraid that it was the head (it over heated a week ago) but I found a crack
on my downpipe. I was looking through the bentley on the best way to
remove this but it doesn't say. My question is how hard is it to replace
a downpipe? Is it strait forward? It sure doesn't look like it is.
What am I going to have to move to get at this thing?
