Hissing from the gearbox

My 5KCSTQ sedans both do this, but in 4th gear. The gray 87 was actually
much worse in 3rd, 4th and 5th. I took the shift lever ball and socket
apart, rebuilt it, and ... no change. I did discover that if I canted the
locator ring to the right (discovered this by driving around with the thing
half assembled and fussing with the innards by hand), the hiss went away.
Before embarking on this course, I went to every Audi wrench within 50
miles. None had heard of the problem.

Anyway, my work around was to put a shim under the left side of the locator
ring (a wooden wedge, actually), then reassemble. It works to this day, 3
years later. I believe this is caused by worn bushings in the shifter
linkage, which are neglected since they are almost impossible to get at
without dropping the transmission. Also, they are in the direct path of
leaking hydraulic fluid from steering racks on their way out, destroying the
bushing rubber. There is a transverse adjuster link in the shift linkage, so
one could simply adjust this out, but, as I said, it's a real pain to get at
without dropping the transmission.

To: quattro at audifans.comThe car is an '865KTQ, when it is in neutral there
is no sound, when it is in gear there is a constant hissing coming from the
gearbox. when wiggle the gear selector the sound alters a bit, what can
cause this, is it as easy as replacing some bushings to fix it?

I noticed the same problem with my 1991 200TQ, but I only notice the hissing
(mine sounds more like light grinding, I'd say) in 3rd and 5th gears. In
3rd, if I shift right to the 'top', the hissing/grinding noise is worst, but
if I pull back on the knob slightly towards neutral, the noise goes away.
On mine, it does that even with the clutch pedal pressed down as I'm *about*
to shift to 3rd.
I'm taking it in this morning for some other work (tie-rod end, CV boot,
some other 'minor' problems) so I'll see what the guys say about this noise.

Also need new rear calipers and both emerg. brake cables replaced. One shop
says they usually take the differential out to replace the cables, so I may
as well get some of my leaking (lightly?) transmission seals redone at the
same time. Does this sound right?
