I bought infinity separates, with x-overs as you describe (for roughly $100
per door X 4) for my Avant. Mine were also smaller than the original tweeter
holes. The kind folks at my car audio store already had the the adapter
bezel rings instock, so I just threw that into the purchase. They work
GREAT, even with the usually poopy stock 45 w/channel available from the
Sony head. They're somewhat more fragile than the original mounting, but
robust enough for everyday use. Remember, you can never get any better sound
than the transducers can supply. Don't skimp on speakers. You'll love the
sound from separates.

Subject: ideas for fitting tweeters in type 44?
I'm trying to update the stereo in the old 5kcs starting with
speakers. The units I purchased are separates plus x-overs
pretty much as the stock system is organized. However, they
have tweeters which mount in holes considerably smaller than
the original high frequency speakers. Does anyone make an
attractive adaptor bezel ring to solve this problem? If not, I may
wind up machining up something. Jeeze, another damn
project. I also experimented with dismembering a stock
speaker to salvage the mount/grill. Boy, those little rascals
are built well! TIA for any ideas. (Please note I will be away from
the keyboard for a few days, so I won't be able to respond
for a bit. Cheers.)
